The Role of a Master of Ceremonies or MC

A master of ceremonies, microphone controller or MC (emcee), is the host of an official public or private staged event or other performance. The main responsibility of the Master of Ceremonies is to act as a host. The MC should have a strong and relaxed gain and maintain the attention audience’s attention. A good MC ensures that the event runs smoothly, is on time and that important people at the event are introduced and in a professional manner.

The MC usually presents performers, speaks to the audience, and generally keeps the event moving. The MC may also tell jokes or anecdotes, and sometimes also acts as the protocol officer during official functions.

MC Briefing and Preparation

It is important for the client to brief the Master of Ceremonies fully, particularly about other speakers and personalities involved, so that they can be treated appropriately and made to feel comfortable. Particular audience members may also need to be acknowledged during the proceedings.

The Master of Ceremonies prepares for the event based on the client’s needs, making the right adjustments, and wearing appropriate clothing etc to suit the function. A little humour is often required, and again this will be tailored to suit the particular tone of the event. Often small adlibbing opportunities arise to further personalise the event as it unfolds.

The MC will provide energy and be resourceful enough to smooth over any unforseen incidents. The agenda for the brief should be clear, but allow room for adjustments such as no shows by other speakers etc. Sometimes other speakers may need a little prodding to keep on track timing wise.

Speakers will be properly introduced and the MC will provide prompts to initiate audience applause or other forms of recognition. Some speakers make need a little guidance and assistance to the podium and microphone. The Master of Ceremonies will provide bridging comments between speaker, and insert anecdotes where appropriate, and this is where a good brief is indispensible.
During breaks in the proceedings, for meals, music etc, the MC will act to bring people together, initiate conversations and keep things running smoothly.

MC Closing the Event

The event should be closed with enthusiasm, and sometimes the presentation of gifts or awards is involved. Highlights will be noted and any inspirational points, or closing quotes made at this time. Sponsors will be thanked again, and if necessary the Master of Ceremonies can send out thank you notes to key participants following the event.
